Manchester United have been offered hope in their bid to bring Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell to Old Trafford this summer.
Canaries legend David Phillips has said that he expects many of the club’s promising young players to leave in the summer transfer window, if Norwich do not keep their place in the Premier League.
United have been linked with both Cantwell and centre-back Ben Godfrey, while Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis have both also been tipped to make high-profile moves at the end of the season.
Phillips admits Norwich are going to find it hard to retain the services of their top names, and he believes the success of former Canaries midfielder James Maddison since he left the club will only inspire the current crop to follow in his footsteps.
“You have got to be very careful whenever you’re thinking of moving clubs,” Phillips told the Pink’Un.
“There are five or six players at Norwich that are very much going to be in demand. Daniel will want to keep hold of all of them I’m sure but will know that if someone offers a lot of money then some will leave.
“Ultimately it will come down to what clubs come in for them and how much they are offering. But the players would be wise to look at someone like James Maddison. He left Norwich when he was 21 and you could see he was ready for it.”
Cantwell’s game is well suited to the style of football that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to implement at Old Trafford, although the Red Devils squad is currently midfield heavy and he may find it hard to earn regular game time.
