Neil: Norwich display at Watford not acceptable

Alex Neil will sit down with his Norwich City squad on Monday and analyse what he deemed as an “unacceptable” performance at Watford.

The Canaries have now just one victory in their last 10 Premier League outings after a 2-0 defeat at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Watford skipper Troy Deeney opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half before Odion Ighalo completed the victory in injury time.

And with Bournemouth claiming a shock victory at Chelsea in Saturday’s late game, Neil finds his side just one point clear of safety.

“I am not a big talker after the game because I don’t see the point in ridiculing and shouting at them when there is nothing they can do about it,” said Neil following his side’s sixth defeat from their last eight in the top flight.

“I have said a few words to them and I let them know that what they did was not acceptable and we will analyse it and go through it on Monday and try and improve on that.

“Anybody who is used to winning games and being successful – in the limited time that I have managed – it is a sore one to take.

“There is huge disappointment there, but it is how you respond and how you react that makes us the team that we want to become.”

Norwich enjoyed the better start on a cold and blustery afternoon at Vicarage Road.

But the hosts soon began to take a stranglehold on the game with Ighalo, who took his goal tally to nine in the league this season, causing the Norwich defence problems all afternoon.

“I did not really see him first half but as the second half wore on he became more and more of a threat,” said Neil in reference to the Nigerian striker.

“His sharp movements down the side caused us a problem, but we knew it was coming and we did not perform well enough to deal with him.

“We need to have a look at ourselves and make sure we get back to our standards. We have turned up against the bigger teams, but Saturday was a big disappointment.”
