Fantasy Football: Massive Sterling gamble; Van Dijk gets the hook

The Premier League’s best attacker – on current form – and defender are left out this week as huge gambles are taken in the frantic search for Fantasy Football points.

Our man Dave Tindall takes on the Premier League’s Fantasy Football game and will give you some healthy tips each week on who could do the business to boost your points total.

One result dominated the Week 5 fixtures as Norwich stunned Manchester City 3-2 at Carrow Road. Great news if you’re one of the many who had two-goal Teemu Pukki (me!). But not great news if most of your budget was invested in Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne who managed 3pts between them (me again). Pukki, by the way, is now the game’s highest points scorer with 49. That’s some going.

You can follow Dave’s journey throughout the season right here on TEAMtalk…

Gameweek 1 – 87pts

Gameweek 2 – 53pts

Gameweek 3 – 45pts

Gameweek 4 – 76pts

Gameweek 5 – 48pts

It’s never good if your tally is below the Average which is displayed on the left of the page but that was me last week. It somehow didn’t seem that bad as my strikers contributed four goals between them but there were very few contributions from elsewhere. Still third in the league I guess and just a couple of points off second.

Overall points: 293

League position: 3rd

Week 5 breakdown (3-4-3)

Goalkeeper: 0pts

Defence: 7pts

Midfield: 7pts

Forwards: 34pts

Well done the strikers but goalkeeper Rui Patricio shipped five goals, Liverpool and Everton didn’t keep clean sheets and the midfield gave nothing.

Plan of action

Project Manchester City failed miserably last week and having three City midfielders/forwards at big prices is starting to look like poor management. I need to narrow it down – even though they are at home to Watford this weekend. Aguero had the night off against Shakhtar in midweek so he stays but I’m swapping Sterling for Sadio Mane. The Senegal star banged in two goals against Chelsea in the Super Cup, helped himself to a brace last week against Newcastle and I fancy him to give Frank Lampard another headache. And he’s 0.5m cheaper than Sterling. In another Liverpool move, I’ll bank £1m for swapping Virgil Van Dijk for his central defensive partner Joel Matip as both are basically scoring the same points. It costs me -4pts but opens up some cash for future trades. I now have a £1.5m surplus.

Out: Raheem Sterling – £12.3m, Virgil Van Dijk – £6.5m

In: Sadio Mane – £11.6m, Joel Matip – £5.5m

Final thoughts

A bit concerned that seven of my first XI are on the road this week. Will I come to regret trading out Sterling – especially as he scored a hat-trick against Watford last season? We’ll soon find out.
