Power Rankings: Spurs 7th, Arsenal 11th, Chelsea 18th

Tottenham and Arsenal are only seventh and 11th in the Power Rankings despite weekend draws, while Chelsea are down in 18th.

In Power Rankings, we award points from 0.5 to 10, decided by an algorithm based on bookmaker odds and winning margins.

It helps, particularly in the early stages of the season, before every team has played all the others, to highlight the real value of the points won and lost.

West Ham, for example, have 22 points in the actual Premier League table but have a massive 48 in the Power Rankings having won at Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City.

For the Irons, this alternative table highlights the true value of the points they’ve won – points that relatively few other teams will get – but also leaves them wondering ‘what if’, with bonus points at Emirates Stadium, Anfield and the Etihad tempered by home defeats to Leicester City and Bournemouth.

Week 14

Crystal Palace – 5: Beating Newcastle United at home is no great shakes, perhaps, but thrashing them 5-1 earned Palace five points – the highest score of the week in the Power Rankings.

Sunderland – 4: On a low-scoring weekend, Sunderland were the next highest scorers courtesy of a 2-0 win over in-form Stoke City at the Stadium of Light. The Wearsiders were the longest-odds winners of the weekend at 11/5.

Manchester City – 3: A 3-1 win over Southampton at the Etihad Stadium earned Manuel Pellegrini’s side three points to move them up a place to third in the Power Rankings.

Watford – 3: It was only against bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa, but an away win for Watford was also worth three points.

Norwich City – 2.5: Their draw against Arsenal was only worth a point in reality, but Alex Neil’s side pick up 2.5 in the Power Rankings after coming from behind to leave the Gunners without a Premier League win for the month.

Liverpool – 2: Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on the other hand lose a point having scraped past Swansea City 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday courtesy of James Milner’s second-half penalty. The Reds were 9/20 to claim the victory.

Bournemouth – 1.5: An incredible comeback against Everton at Dean Court earns Bournemouth 1.5 points to move them off the bottom of the Power Rankings table above Aston Villa.

Leicester City – 1.5: Also claiming an extra half a point for a draw were Leicester City, who drew 1-1 with Manchester United at the King Power Stadium courtesy of yet another goal for Jamie Vardy.

West Brom – 1.5: Continuing their impressive away form this season were West Brom, who came from behind to hold Power Rankings leaders West Ham to a 1-1 draw at Upton Park on Sunday.

Chelsea – 1: A draw at Tottenham has to go down as a good result for Chelsea, even on the back of the hosts’ Europa League trip, but it’s worth only a point in the Power Rankings, with Jose Mourinho’s side only narrow outsiders going into the game.

Everton – 1: Having blown a 2-0 and then 3-2 lead to draw at Bournemouth, Everton will have been ruining dropped points on Saturday evening as they lost ground on the top four in the Power Rankings.

Manchester United – 1: They may be third in the real Premier League table, but the nature of United’s unconvincing season so far is perhaps better reflected by their position of seventh in the Power Rankings.

Tottenham – 1: Despite making it 13 games unbeaten, Tottenham are only eighth in the Power Rankings, with Manchester City still the only team from last season’s nine they have beaten so far this season.

West Ham – 1: The Power Rankings leaders endured a frustrating day on Sunday as they were held at home by West Brom. They still lead by 10 points from Crystal Palace, however.

Arsenal – 0.5: Fourth in the real table but only 11th in the Power Rankings, Arsenal dropped more points on Sunday as they could only draw at Norwich City. The Gunners beat Manchester United 3-0 last month, but their next biggest scalp according to last season’s finishing positions has been Swansea City.
