Power Rankings: Alternative PL table after week 25

Leicester City, Everton, Sunderland, Arsenal and Aston Villa were the weekend’s five biggest Power Rankings winners.

In Power Rankings, we award points from 0.5 to 10, decided by an algorithm based on bookmaker odds and winning margins.

It rewards teams scoring lots of goals and also those defying expectations but sees odds-on favourites penalised for sneaking past inferior opponents by the odd goal.

With last season’s top four of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United losing an incredible 25 games between them already this season, it sees some surprise names at the top of the Power Rankings…

Week 25

Leicester City – 8: Now five points clear at the top of the Premier League, Leicester are also edging ever closer to the Power Rankings summit after a fantastic 3-1 win at Manchester City on Saturday. West Ham’s wins at the Etihad, Emirates and Anfield earned them a massive buffer, but the Foxes are chipping away at it week after week.

Everton – 5: Seemingly over their rough patch, Everton won 3-0 for the third game in succession on Saturday as they brushed aside Stoke City with a hugely-impressive performance at the Britannia Stadium.

Sunderland – 4.5: Liverpool’s propensity to give up home points continues to prove handy for those seeking a Power Rankings boost, with Sunderland’s comeback from two goals down at Anfield moving them further clear of Swansea City.

Arsenal – 4: A somewhat generous 11/10 to beat Bournemouth at Dean Court on Sunday, Arsenal responded with a win which, if not totally convincing, at least kept them on the tails of Leicester City ahead of this weekend’s crucial clash at Emirates Stadium.

Aston Villa – 4: Could they stay up? Surely not, but Remi Garde’s side are at least starting to make a fight of it, beating Norwich City 2-0 at Villa Park to move to within four points of second-bottom Sunderland and eight of fourth-bottom Newcastle United.

Newcastle United – 3: A straightforward 1-0 win over West Brom at St James’ Park earns Newcastle a routine three points that keeps them safely marooned in Power Rankings mid-table. If only they could say the same about their Premier League position…

Manchester United – 2: On a weekend which saw Tottenham win, Manchester United are certain to have been left disappointed to only draw at Chelsea, particularly after conceding a late equaliser. They were 3/1 to win, though, and so pick up an extra point for their draw against the odds.

Southampton – 2: Conversely, Southampton were a miserly 8/11 to beat West Ham at St Mary’s on Saturday, dropping a point as a result of only scoring once in their win.

Tottenham – 2: Also dropping a point were Tottenham, who were superb against Watford but found the net only once and so are penalised as the shortest-odds winners of the weekend.

Crystal Palace – 1.5: After five successive defeats in the Premier League, Alan Pardew was relieved to see his Crystal Palace side stop the rot with a 1-1 draw at Swansea City. The Eagles are still flying high in the Power Rankings despite their poor run.

Chelsea – 1: Favourites to beat Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Chelsea were indebted to Diego Costa’s stoppage-time equaliser to earn a point in both formats.

Swansea City – 1: Francesco Guidolin maintained his unbeaten start as Swansea City manager on Saturday, but the south Wales club were favourites to beat Crystal Palace and may view it as an opportunity missed that they could only draw.

Liverpool – 0.5: Two-nil ahead when their fans staged a walkout, Liverpool somehow proceeded to only draw with Sunderland, losing two and a half Power Rankings points in the process having been big odds-on favourites to win the game at Anfield.
